Why Isn't Every Physicist a Bohmian?

چکیده
This note collects, classifies and evaluates common criticism against the deBroglie-Bohm theory, including Ockham’s razor, asymmetry in the deBroglie-Bohm theory, the “surreal trajectory” problem and relativistic generalizations. This controversy highlights that even in science theories can not solely be evaluated based on their empirical confirmation.

Grounding Bohmian Mechanics in Weak Values and Bayesianism
Bohmian mechanics (BM) is a popular interpretation of quantum mechanics in which particles have real positions. The velocity of a point x in configuration space is defined as the standard probability current j(x) divided by the probability density P (x). However, this “standard” j is in fact only one of infinitely many that transform correctly and satisfy Ṗ + ∇ · j = 0. In this article I show t...
متن کامل1 Bell on Bohm
A memorial conference for John Bell, open to the public, was held at Rutgers University around 20 years ago. I gave there a short talk on Bell’s views about David Bohm’s “hidden variables” formulation of quantum mechanics, a version of quantum mechanics often called the de Broglie-Bohm theory or Bohmian mechanics. This theory was in fact discovered by Louis de Broglie in 1927. In 1952, it was r...
متن کاملWhy Bohmian Mechanics? One- and Two-Time Position Measurements, Bell Inequalities, Philosophy, and Physics
In Bohmian mechanics, particles follow continuous trajectories, so two-time position correlations have been well defined. However, Bohmian mechanics predicts the violation of Bell inequalities. Motivated by this fact, we investigate position measurements in Bohmian mechanics by coupling the particles to macroscopic pointers. This explains the violation of Bell inequalities despite two-time posi...
متن کاملGeneric Bohmian Trajectories of an Isolated Particle
The generic Bohmian trajectories are calculated for an isolated particle in an approximate energy eigenstate, for an arbitrary one-dimensional potential well. It is shown, that the necessary and sufficient condition for there to be a negligible probability of the trajectory deviating significantly from the classical trajectory at any stage in the motion is, that the state be a narrowly localise...
متن کاملThe Emergence and Interpretation of Probability in Bohmian Mechanics
The Bohm interpretation of quantum mechanics is capable of illustrating, by itself, virtually every philosophical and foundational conundrum associated with physical probability. One reason this is true is that the Bohm interpretation comes in many forms, both stochastic and deterministic. The other reason is that quantum mechanics is to Bohmian mechanics roughly as statistical mechanics is to ...
